Save Your Money by Separating Your Wants from Your Needs

An astonishing eighty percent of households are spending more money than they make. This means that every month these households are using credit to cover the shortfalls that exist between the income and the expenses. The majority of the money that is being used over the income is used for wants, rather than needs. These wants are considered to be variable expenses which vary from month to month and should be curbed for those trying to save money within the household.

First, to get into the habit of saving money, it is important to learn the importance of separating your wants from your needs. Make a list of all of the expenses that your household incurs in the run of a month. Use past bank and credit card statements as well as receipts that you have been collecting to determine the expenses that are incurred within the household. Make two sections for these types of expenses: your wants and your needs.

After the receipts have been sorted into their respective sections, it is now time to go through the first pile, the “needs”. Determine if these products and receipts which are in this pile are truly needed in the budget.

When trying to cut costs to save money, sometimes it is necessary to cut the unnecessary wants from the budget. Cutting costs to the bare minimum can help to find money in the budget for savings or debt repayment. Both of these aspects are important when you are trying to determine the needs or wants within the budget to make it balance.

How do you determine if an expense within the budget is a “need”? Needs within the budget include such aspects of paying for housing or repaying debt etc.  Transportation may also fall under the category of needs if the person is using the transportation to get to work to earn their income.

How do you determine if an expense is considered “wants”? Wants within the budget are things that are not necessary for survival. These items are things that the consumer can live without such as gifts, clothing and accessories as well as other items that may be considered frivolous. For example, a new television may not be necessary if you have one that is in good working order, but upgrading the television to a High Definition set is going to be under the column of wants.

Before making any purchases, determine if it falls under the category of wants or needs. If the item falls under the category of wants, it may be time to reconsider the purchase. After all, being able to differentiate between the wants and needs arise within the budget.
