First Jobs for Students
Since a lot of students read my site, I thought I’d write about jobs for high school and college students. The first part time job I took was when I was fifteen years old. My Mom told me that if I wanted to drive when I was sixteen I needed to get a job. I got a job at Knott’s Berry Farm, which is an amusement park in Southern California, bussing tables and sweeping floors. It wasn’t the best job in town, but it wasn’t the worst either. My Mom was happy I was working and I was happy I was going to be able to drive when I turned sixteen.
Some of you may be wondering “where can I find a job”? When I was looking for my first job, I had to rely on classified ads, or word of mouth. I actually found out about Knott’s from a friend of mine at school. Today I would suggest using the Internet as the tool you should use to search for employment.
Whether you are a high school or college student I do have a couple suggestions. When I got my first job as a teenager, I looked for any job that would pay me. I would suggest to you however, to look for something that interests you. If you have an idea of what you want to major in, or what you would like to do in the future, look for something that will give you experience in that field. Not only will this help you in the future, since you will be gaining experience, it will also help you find out if this is something you really want to do. By trying to get a summer or part-time job in your field you have a chance to get a little taste of your possible future career and decide whether it really is right for you.
For those of you that are students reading this post and are already settled into a job, leave me a comment and let me know about it. Is there something you would change? Also, if you already are out of school and working in your field, what suggestions do you have for teenagers, high school students and college students? Is there something you would do different if you had it to do over again?
I recommend the following for finding a job in your area
